Disfigured...Call for the Opera House to realise Utzon's full vision.
Australian Architects magazine commissioned this editorial illustration to accompany an article on the refurbishment of the Sydney Opera House. The story goes that Jorn Utzon was so over budget that the NSW government sacked him and Government architects finished the project. In the process, price dictated the interior and other important features such as the glass 'helmet'. Utzon never returned to Sydney. The Opera House, as wonderful as it is, could have been even better. Architects around the world are calling for the NSW Government to realise the full Utzon vision on the up coming major refurbishment. This illustration was done with the airbrush and is over ten to fifteen years old...before we all went digital. I think it is one of the last airbrushed jobs I ever did. It is a favourite only because of the subject matter, the Opera House as a disfigured clown...I have always loved the building despite that.
